In a world where everything can be so serious, that every word or action must be analyzed or explained, I feel lucky in what I create. It is spontaneous, fun, and makes me happy. The small space of time between the viewer and the painting usually produces a smile on their face.
My primary work is flowers, horses, buffalo, and landscapes. My work is highly abstracted through the use of bold colors. Although similar color schemes are often employed in the floral series each work is created individually. Like a fingerprint, they cannot be duplicated and are one of a kind. I am often surprised at the end of the drying time at what has developed. The technique for the centers of the flowers are breast impressions. It is very subtle but you can see the roundness and skin folds the breast impression leaves in the painting. Generally they are mine, but friends and family have also offered their “brushes” to add their signature to a painting. My Mother, Daughter and I painted “Three Generations” painting before my Mother’s Mastectomy two years ago. In honor of her it was done to increase awareness of Breast Cancer. I love to paint outdoors. There is a lot of chaos when I paint, and it is a messy process. I turn the canvas sideways, upside down, working from every angle. I continually drop colors into a fluid puddle of paint. Even though I work primarily with acrylics, it usually takes several days for a painting to become fully dry. The drying process continues outside and is where many happy accidents occur. Morning dew will merge together an unusual color combination. I may walk away, only to return and find; birds perched upon the canvas, a trapped bug, leaves that have fallen from the trees, or footprints of where a dog or cat did not let a wet painting became an obstacle in their trek across the backyard.
